College of St. Joseph's softball team travels to Dean College for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 5 with game times set for 2 and 4 p.m.
Dean College is 3-12 on the season. The Lady Saints are 3-11 and hope to capture their first regular season wins tomorrow in Franklin, Mass. against the Bulldogs. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Bulldogs and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Saints have not faced common opponents yet this year.
CSJ's last game day was Saturday, March 17 against Penn State Hazelton. The Fighting Saints fell 8-0 and 6-3 in the doubleheader, which took place in Pennsylvania. Shelby Fenton had three hits on the day and Katie Jenkins recorded two. Vanessa Quigley also had two hits, including one double. Quigley and Arielys Rodriguez recorded one RBI apiece in game two. Lena Tirotta and Sierra Jaeger also had a hit in the latter game. Fenton and McKenzie Ebert took the losses on the mound for CSJ.
Overall, Rodriguez has notched 12 runs, five RBI, two stolen bases, one triple and a .386 batting average. Quigley currently holds an impressive .425 batting average. She also has recorded nine RBI, seven runs and three doubles. Fenton is batting .378, has nine RBI, six runs, two doubles and the team's only home run of the year thus far - a home run that was a grand slam against the defending USCAA Champions. Lena Tirotta recorded two home runs in the fall season, but has yet to round the bases off one of her hits this regular season.
Jenna Crowley is leading the Lady Saints in strikeouts with 14. In the batter's box she has notched eight RBI, five runs and two doubles. Ebert has 11 strikeouts on the year and a 1-2 record. Crowley is 1-3.
Dean last played on Tuesday, April 4 and fell 14-3 in five innings against Wentworth College. Melanie Rios-Nevarez had two hits (including a double), two RBI and scored one run in the contest. Alexis Portales recorded one hit and two runs. Karissa Menzinger took the loss on the mound and dropped to 3-7 on the year. She threw two strikeouts and gave up 10 hits.
Overall this season, Portales has racked up 10 stolen bases and three home runs for the Bulldogs. Menzinger has recorded 54 total strikeouts. Rios-Nevarez and Mezinger lead the squad with 10 total RBI.
The doubleheader against Dean will be a nice segway for getting back into the swing of game mode before the Lady Saints travel to Maine this weekend for contests against Central Maine Community College and Southern Maine CC on April 7 and 8.
