College of St. Joseph's baseball team won three games against Central Maine Community College (CMCC) over the weekend. On Friday, April 12 the Fighting Saints traveled to Maine and picked up a 6-4 win. On Saturday, April 13 CSJ hosted CMCC and won 4-1 and 10-3.
Friday's 6-4 away victory was highlighted by Jeremy Johnson's two home runs, 4 RBIs, and 8 strikeout performance on the pitcher's mound. Johnson threw 8.0 innings and allowed just 3 runs and 6 hits in his first collegiate pitching start. Lincoln Pritchard picked up the save; in 1.0 inning he tallied 1 strikeout and gave up 2 hits, 1 run. CMCC's Jared Rubin took the loss. He allowed 5 hits, 3 runs in 4.2 innings pitched.
The Fighting Saints strung together 11 total hits to the Mustangs' 8 team hits. Johnson and William Leino went 3-for-5 at the plate for CSJ. Johnson scored 3 runs while Pritchard, Denilson Reyes and Junior Bonhomme each had 1 run. Tristen Ciarlo had a double. The Saints got on the scoreboard immediately with a run in the top of the first. CMCC took a 2-1 lead in the third frame, but CSJ put up 2 runs in the fifth, 2 in the sixth and 1 in the seventh to seal the win.
Saturday's first game saw starter Jason Albert allow just 1 hit, 1 run in 4.0 innings of work on the mound for CSJ. He had 3 strikeouts. Kyle Gould came in for relief and allowed just 2 hits in 3.0 innings pitched. Both pitchers also contributed at the plate. Gould had a single, while Albert's double at the bottom of the sixth inning sent Mathew Santiago and Leino home for the 4-1 lead. CSJ led just 2-1 through 5.5 innings.
Also connecting at the plate for CSJ in game one was Ciarlo, who had 1 hits, 1 run and 1 RBI. Johnson and Leino had 1 hit, 1 run and Justin Holmberg also recorded a single. The Fighting Saints outhit CMCC 6-3.
Game two of Saturday's doubleheader lead off with two runs by the Mustangs in the top of the first. The Saints responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, before going off for 5 runs in the bottom of the second inning and a 6-2 lead. Gould hit a 3-run triple to put the Saints ahead 4-2. He went on to score on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Santiago had a double that sent Lincoln Pritchard home for a run.
CSJ then put 2 runs on the scoreboard in the third inning, and 1 in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Fighting Saints had 12 team hits. CMCC had 8. Gould had 5 RBIs on the game off 2 hits. He also scored 1 run. Pritchard had 3 hits, 2 RBIs and 1 run. Santiago had 2 hits. Ciarlo and Joe Ruby had 2 runs apiece.
Leino earned the win for CSJ on the mound. He threw a complete game with 6 strikeouts and allowed 7 hits, 3 runs. Nick Tormans gave up 8 runs, 7 hits in 2.1 innings for CMCC. The three losses at the hands of CSJ put the Mustangs at 7-13 on the season. CSJ improved to 11-10.
