The College of St. Joseph volleyball team is on the road this weekend for a rematch against the University of Maine - Machias Clippers at 2 p.m. in a tournament hosted by Paul Smith's College.
The two teams matched up Sunday, Sept. 3 at the Husson Invitational when the Saints (1-3) picked up their first win against the Clippers (1-3) in an exciting 3-2 game. It was CSJ's first win since the 2015 season.
The Fighting Saints were on track to sweep the game 3-0, winning the first two sets 25-17 and 25-21. But the Clippers fought back, winning the next two sets 25-16 and 25-23. The Fighting Saints showed resilience, winning the final set 16-14 and earning their first win of the 2017 season.
Freshman Ryann Agnew led CSJ with 18 kills and 5 service aces, while also contributing 32 digs. Also a freshman, Jordan Mixon had 9 kills, 2 service aces and led the team in assists with 12. Timell Montgomery had 9 kills, 5 assists, 3 service aces and led the team with 35 digs. Kali Drum co-led in service aces with five, while also working defensively to provide the team with 15 digs. Ashley Vasas contributed with 16 digs, as well as two assists.
Before this year, CSJ had fallen to Maine - Machias 3-0 in their last five match-ups. Currently on a one-game winning streak, the Saints hope their upcoming match versus UMM will extend the streak to two for the first time in school history.
