The College of St. Joseph's women's soccer team will face-off versus the NHTI Lynx at home on Thursday at 4:15 p.m. This marks the Fighting Saints' first match of the season, after Sunday's game against Johnson State was postponed.
Nine new members join CSJ's squad this year, with senior Jane Cretella and juniors Elizabeth Turco and Doris Rodrigues being the only returners from 2016. Among the new players is freshman goalkeeper Samantha Beaudreault, who will be crucial in net for CSJ.
NHTI also has a young 2017 squad, with 13 freshman. Among the Lynx returners are seniors Stefani Gauthier and Alexis Duclos, and sophomore Hannah Pellerin, who each recorded goals in last year's match-up between the two teams, where CSJ fell 9-0.
The Lynx are 1-0 on the season, having beat the Unity Rams 2-0 at home on Sept. 2. Maura Hart scored at the end of the first half off an assist by freshman classmate Mary Grzanna. Another first-year player made the score sheet in the second half, with Danielle Ross sealing the game at 2-0 after beating her defender and breaking free to goal, slotting the ball past Unity goalkeeper Sarah Cantwell.
The Fighting Saints are coming off a winless 2016 season with optimism for 2017. Coach Teri Perry was awarded YSCC Coach of the Year in 2016, and has worked tirelessly to bring committed recruiting prospects to CSJ for seasons to come.
