College of St. Joseph Women's Basketball returned to action Sunday, Jan. 8 taking on the SUNY Canton Kangaroos. The Lady Saints were victorious in their return, beating the Kangaroos 58-45. Their record has now improved to 7-3 overall on the season.
CSJ was led by freshman forward Markell Marquez. She stepped up big for the Lady Saints, coming up with a game high 14 points and also tallying 12 rebounds. Marquez created a number of second chances for CSJ, pulling down an impressive nine offensive boards. She was also highly efficient shooting the ball, going 50 percent from the field.
Junior forward Alexius Brooks was the X-factor in the game. She came off the bench to score 11 points, while accumulating a game-high 13 rebounds for CSJ. Brooks played with an amount of aggression and effort that CSJ needed to pull away from the Kangaroos. Her teammates fed off her energy and committed themselves on the defensive side of the floor.
The Lady Saints were ultra-aggressive on defense, forcing 25 turnovers throughout the game. They had 10 steals as a team, including a game-high three steals from freshman guard Sabrina Llanes.
It was a great way for CSJ to start the spring semester after losing their last two games played before winter break. The Lady Saints dominated the paint for the majority of the game, coming up with 55 rebounds compared to just 36 for SUNY Canton. They also had 23 second chance points, while the Kangaroos only were able to tally five. CSJ played more physical than SUNY Canton and that helped them secure the victory.
The Lady Saints will host Villa Maria on Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. for their next contest.
