The College of St. Joseph's 2017 men's soccer team debuts versus conference rival NHTI Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m.
The Fighting Saints are coming off their winningest season in recent history, finishing 12-8 overall and 8-1 in-conference. Last season, the Saints dropped their first conference game 3-2 in a gritty contest versus Vermont Tech, and finished conference play strong from there.
In CSJ's most recent contest against NHTI, the Saints defeated the Lynx 2-1 in exciting fashion – at home in the final seconds of double overtime. Sergio Lopes scored unassisted just before halftime to tie the game at 1. After over an hour of scoreless play, Rosyvelt Baessa scored the game-winner off an assist by Alex Andrade with mere seconds to go in the game. Lopes and Baessa return this season as seniors, and Andrade a junior.
Seven other talented players are returning this year from the 2016 Fighting Saints squad. Joining them is 6-foot-6-inch freshman goalkeeper Maxwell Singh, and a total of five new recruits or transfer students.
NHTI heads into Wednesday's contest with a 1-0 record, after seeing an impressive five players score in a convincing 5-0 win versus Unity College on Sept. 2. Jackson Schneider provided a game-high two assists and Jeremy Caruso tallied one assist, one goal. The four other goal scorers were Cole Owens, Ridha Al Jumaili, Jake Davis and Tim Bortnick.
The Saints hope to be undefeated before traveling to Maine for another conference match-up versus Southern Maine Community College on Saturday.
