CSJ Baseball announces 2019 schedule

College of St. Joseph's baseball team kicks off the 2019 season with a six-game road trip spanning Feb. 19 - Feb. 23 with contests in North Carolina and Florida. The 2019 CSJ baseball schedule is highlighted by several nationally ranked opponents, including the United States Collegiate Athletic Association's (USCAA) defending National Champions Penn State DuBois, and 11 home games that begin in the month of April.

The Fighting Saints will first face Webber International in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 19 beginning at 4pm. Webber is a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) team that was ranked in the NAIA preseason poll as #18 and will be facing the Saints following games with the #1 and #3 teams in the country.

Next up for the Saints will be a single game at Keiser University on Feb. 20 at 1pm.  CSJ will have day's break before heading Winston-Salem, North Carolina to play Piedmont International on Friday, Feb. 22 for a 4pm game. They will conclude their trip south with two games at Piedmont on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 12pm and 2pm. The Fighting Saints will wait exactly one month before returning to game action at the University of New Hampshire.

The doubleheader against UNH's squad is scheduled for Saturday, March 23 at 5:30pm. On March 27, CSJ travels to Pine Manor College in Brookline, Mass. for a 4pm contest. That weekend, the Fighting Saints are scheduled to play Southern Maine Community College at 1pm on Saturday, March 30 in their first Yankee Small College Conference match-up of 2019. The week leads up to a highly anticipated contest on Sunday, March 31 against USCAA defending National Champions Penn State DuBois. The doubleheader is set for 1pm and 3pm.

The month of April will kick off at Great Bay Community College on Friday, April 5 at 7pm. The Herons will then travel to CSJ on Saturday, April 26 for the Saints' home opener. The Saints will face Bryant & Stratton (Albany), Fisher College, New Hampshire Technical Institute and Central Maine Community College throughout the week of April 7th.

On Saturday, April 13th, the Fighting Saints will play host to Central Maine for a doubleheader beginning at 1pm. On Monday the 15th, they host Southern Maine at 2pm and 4pm. CSJ travels at the end of the week to a Round Robin in Pennsylvania, first playing Central Penn on Friday, April 19 at 12pm. On Saturday, the Saints play Penn State Brandywine and on Monday, April 22 they face Point Park University, who came into the season ranked #16 in the NAIA, for a doubleheader.

Clearly, there are stretches of the 2019 schedule that include a multitude of games in a short amount of time. "Our biggest challenge is going to be pitching depth in the thickest portions of our schedule," said CSJ Head Coach Cameron Curler. "We have a few guys who we'll be relying on heavily but we're going to need a few guys to step up, as well."

CSJ plays Fisher College in Boston on Friday, April 26 before rounding out April with a doubleheader at home versus NHTI on Sunday, April 28 at 12pm. The Fighting Saints' final game of the season is scheduled to be home against National Collegiate Athletic Association opponent Pine Manor on Wednesday, May 1 at 3pm.

When asked what his strategy will be this spring season, Coach Curler said his expectation is that his players work harder than any team they face.

"There are so many things you can't control that go into the game of baseball that we will need to focus on the things we can control. We can control our effort and that we are constantly putting pressure on our opponents," said Curler.
