College of St. Joseph's baseball team picked up two wins, 3-2 and 7-6, against Fisher College on Saturday, April 21.
In game one of the doubleheader held in Schenectady, N.Y., Zachery Mattos and Kordell Henriquez struck out a combined three batters and gave up just three hits. CSJ converted eight hits throughout the contest.
The Fighting Saints trailed 1-0 after three innings of play. In the top of the fourth Fisher went ahead 2-0, but CSJ answered in the bottom of the inning with a run.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Saints tied the game at two. It was at this point that Henriquez was substituted into the game to take Mattos' spot on the mound. Henriquez did not allow a hit nor a run for the remainder of the game to help CSJ shut Fisher down in the final four innings of play.
CSJ's Benny Pena hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jeremy Johnson subbed in to pinch run for Pena and scored the go-ahead run for the Saints by way of a Salvador Cimino walkoff single.
Pena finished the game with two hits and one run. Jedion Cras tallied one hit, one RBI. Kyle Gould recorded two hits and John Loschiavo contributed one hit, one run and a RBI. Mauricio Rondon recorded a single. Cimino's one hit and one RBI came at the perfect time to earn the win for CSJ.
In game two of the day, senior Ryan Cummings threw a complete game with four strikeouts. The Falcons combined for six hits while the Fighting Saints recorded 11.
Fisher jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after their first turn at the plate. CSJ responded with one run in the bottom of the first inning to cut their deficit to 3-1. The Fighting Saints scored one run in the bottom of the third to make the game 3-2. Neither team scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings.
In the sixth, the Falcons recorded another three-run inning to take a 6-2 lead. The Fighting Saints answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth that would prove to be enough for a 7-6 victory. Loschiavo finished with three hits, two runs and a RBI. Cras recorded two hits and three RBI. Pena went 3-for-3 at the plate and recorded one run and Cimino notched a hit, a run and a RBI.
Saturday's games improved CSJ's record to 12-27. Fisher dropped to 24-19.
