Baseball goes 3-1 against Fisher College over the weekend

The College of St. Joseph Baseball team went 3-1 over the weekend against regional rival Fisher College April 28-30. The Fighting Saints are now over .500 for the first time this season, currently sitting at an overall record of 23-21. They are playing better than ever as the regular season comes to a close, winners of eight out of their last nine games played. The Saints were recently ranked No. 3 in the USCAA Week 4 Coaches Poll, only a few points behind WVU Tech and Cincinnati Clermont for the lead. They seem to be coming together as a team at just the right time as the USCAA World Series is only two weeks away. Here is a look at the four games played over the weekend.

April 28

The Fighting Saints got things started with a 6-4 victory over the Fisher Falcons on Friday. Ben Brown pitched the whole nine innings and showed what kind of character he has on the mound. The Falcons came out swinging, scoring all four of their runs in the first inning. Instead of getting upset or down on himself, Brown became more determined and dominating the rest of the game moving forward. He tallied eight strikeouts and only one walk on the way to his first win of the season. Tommy Grant kept up his recent hot streak at the plate, leading the team in hits and RBI at three and two respectively. The Saints had nine total hits as a team.

CSJ was able to win both ends of their doubleheader match-up against the Falcons on Saturday. They won the first game 6-3 and the second game 13-7. Jovan Henriquez got the start for the Saints in game one and he put forth a solid outing. His accuracy was off but he was able to get the job done after tallying six walks in 7.1 innings pitched. Ryan Cummings came in and closed the deal, giving up just two hits and no runs in the final 1.2 innings. Brian Quezada had a game-high three RBI and John Loschiavo went 3-4 from the plate, scoring two runs of his own.

In game two the Saints proved that they can be a dominant offensive team when everybody in the lineup is clicking at the same time. They put together 16 hits leading to a one-sided 13-7 victory over the Fisher Falcons. Loschiavo had another stellar game at the plate, going 4-4 and scoring four runs. Tyler Kunzmann and Brian Quezada each hit long bomb home runs into the football bleachers out past the fence in right field at St. Peter's Field. It took Fisher five different pitchers to get them through the game and none of them had any success against the locked in Saints lineup.

April 30

The Saints fell to the Fisher Falcons 9-6 on Sunday in what was a cold and wet day at St. Peter's Field. CSJ hit the ball decently, accumulating 12 hits throughout the game, but they left 12 men on base. They also made a number of mistakes in the field, which helped Fisher College get out to an early lead that they were able to hold onto.

Up Next:

The Saints will finish out the regular-season with a doubleheader match-up at The College of Saint Rose on Saturday, May 6 starting at 12 p.m.
